My name is Rick DeLeon and after much prayer, thought, and the support of family and friends, I announce my candidacy for Sheriff of Matagorda County. I will seek the Republican nomination in the primary election in March of 2024.

I married my high school sweetheart, Cecilia (Sissy) Saucedo-DeLeon. We have been married for 43 years and are blessed with a son Rick IV (Spouse Amber Layton) and a daughter Selena Renee (Spouse Jeremy Marshall). These two unions have blessed us with five beautiful grandchildren.

Having grown up in El Campo and being an avid outdoorsman, I have spent a great deal of time hunting and fishing in Matagorda County. After my time in the Marine Corps, it was always our goal to come to Bay City and raise our children.

My vision and goal for the future of the Matagorda Sheriff's office is that of strong leadership, continued and improved training in all aspects of law enforcement, and to effectively make the safest environment possible for all of the citizens of Matagorda County. Sissy and I raised our own children here and I want to make Matagorda County as safe as possible to live, work, play, and raise a family.  Meeting these goals will take a collaborative effort from our law enforcement community, our citizens, and our community leaders. I will ensure an atmosphere of professionalism, unity, transparency, and valued community input. No job will be too big or too small to ensure the safety and security of all our citizens and visitors alike.

Upon graduating high school, I enlisted and served eight years in the United States Marine Corps. During this time I obtained the rank of Sergeant, which I held for four and a half years.

After my enlistment, I applied to and was accepted to the Texas Department of Public Safety- Highway Patrol Academy.  After graduating from the Highway Patrol Academy class B-88 in February 1989, I was stationed in Angleton Texas. After one year, I became eligible to transfer to Matagorda County. My family and I returned home to Bay City where we spent the next twelve and half years. During this time in addition to my Highway Patrol duties. I was also part of the Houston Area Civil Disturbance Management Team, District 2C Accident Reconstruction Team, and Department of Public Safety Dive Recovery Team.

Once our children graduated high school and began college, I transferred to the State Capitol in Austin where I served for a year and a half as a Trooper with Capitol Security before being promoted to Governor Rick Perry's Protective Detail. In July 2006, while serving on Governor Perry's detail, I was recruited to the Texas Senate and served six months as the Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms. In January 2007, I was sworn in as the 49th Sergeant-at-Arms of the Texas Senate. After fifteen and a half years in the position, I retired. Shortly thereafter, my wife and I moved home to Bay City.

I look forward to visiting with the citizens of Matagorda County and listening to their concerns, thoughts, and suggestions. Please feel free to contact me by the following.
